Over 200 patients treated in the 39th eye surgery program at Metta Shin Charity Hospital in Taunggyi

Over 200 patients have been successfully treated in the 39th eye surgery program held at Metta Shin Charity Hospital in Taunggyi, Myanmar. All patients requiring surgery will be provided with treatment. The 39th eye surgery program at Metta Shin Charity Hospital in Taunggyi is scheduled to run from July 9th to July 17th. The Metta Shin Welfare Association was established in 2001, and after five years of operation, the Metta Shin Charity Free Clinic was established. The Metta Shin Charity Clinic provided medical services from 2007 until the COVID-19 period in 2020. According to U Nyunt Maung, the chairman of the Metta Shin Association, the focus is on eye surgery due to insufficient staff. The purpose of opening the Metta Shin Charity Hospital is to cure eye diseases for people living in rural areas. "We perform surgery as patients come in. The hospital is closed on Saturdays and full moon days. It is closed for 5 days a month, and open daily on other days. In addition to examinations and consultations on those days, surgeries for patients are performed three days a week: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We plan to perform surgeries for 3,500 eye patients annually. In this 39th camp period, we have performed surgeries for over 200 patients," said U Nyunt Maung, chairman of the Metta Shin Association. In 2023, a total of 15,064 patients were examined and treated, and 1,425 patients underwent surgery. In 2024, 17,730 patients were examined and treated, and 2,569 patients underwent surgery. In 2025, 16,891 patients were examined and treated, and 2,636 patients underwent surgery. From January to June 2026, 7,541 patients were examined and treated, and 802 patients underwent surgery. The doctor's consultation fee, intraocular lens, anesthetic, and one bottle of eye drops are free. To cover staff expenses, eye drops and glasses are sold. The Metta Shin Association also engages in welfare activities, operates an education foundation, conducts blood donation drives, and lends oxygen cylinders. Amidst the current rise in commodity prices, donations are being carefully managed and efforts are focused on replenishing equipment. There is a need for equipment repairs, according to U Nyunt Maung, chairman of the Metta Shin Association.
