Cpl. Jayson Castro, 32, a native of Barangay Diplo in Molave, Zamboanga del Sur, was assigned to the 64th Infantry Battalion based in Bayang, Lanao del Sur. He was killed on Saturday afternoon when at least 10 still-unidentified armed men ambushed his unit in Barangay Lamin, Malabang. His remains arrived at his family’s residence on Sunday and he is scheduled to be buried on July 9. Castro is survived by his wife and their 2-year-old daughter. Rey, the slain soldier’s father, said the family was informed on Saturday afternoon that his son was among those ambushed. The bereaved family appealed to authorities to identify and arrest the attackers. "We demand justice for my son’s death," Rey said. Rey said his son had gone home last week to take an examination at the 1st Infantry “Tabak” Division headquarters in Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur. "It was his decision to become a soldier," Rey recalled. He said his son had served in the military for nine years, first in Basilan before being transferred to Lanao del Sur. According to Rey, Castro returned home every three months for his rest and recreation leave. His widow, Divine, said they had planned to travel to Malabang on Sunday. "He invited us to visit their camp and planned to take us to a nearby beach. It was supposed to be the first time our daughter would visit him there," she said tearfully. Divine said she had access to her husband’s social media account and learned of the ambush through messages in his unit’s group chat. "I prayed that he was only wounded and not killed in action. Hours later, it was confirmed that he was gone," she recounted. The Philippine Army’s 1st Infantry Division has yet to issue a statement on the incident. However, the 64th Infantry Battalion confirmed Castro’s death in a social media post, honoring him as a "brave comrade who made the ultimate sacrifice in the faithful performance of duty."
