Phnom Penh City Announces Free Funeral Services for the Needy

Phnom Penh City has announced that it will provide free funeral services and coffins to citizens facing economic hardship, including the poor, destitute, and homeless. This initiative is a response to recent discussions regarding funeral costs at pagodas. Ms. Dou Sompach, Deputy Director of the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration and its spokesperson, stated on the afternoon of July 22nd that the city will offer these services. Recently, a price list for funeral services at pagodas had surfaced, and despite clarifications from pagoda abbots, public debate on the matter persisted. In light of this, the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration reiterates its commitment to providing funeral services for citizens experiencing financial difficulties, such as the poor, destitute, or homeless. Furthermore, the administration confirmed that it will also provide coffins for those who are extremely poor and cannot afford one.
