DepEd Pushes Equal Access to Education with ‘Last Mile’ Law

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) is finalizing the implementing rules and technical guidelines to ensure the smooth implementation of the Last Mile and Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (Gida) Schools Act that takes effect on Aug. 12. “We can no longer leave behind our teachers and learners in the farthest corners of the country,” the DepEd said. The agency emphasized that the law focuses on equalizing educational opportunities, particularly for those who are left behind due to geographical, economic, social, or physical barriers. It outlines specific measures to ensure that learners in these areas can access quality education. The term "last mile" refers to areas with underdeveloped infrastructure and difficult access. The Gida Schools Act seeks to establish and support schools in these regions, improving access to learning materials, teachers, and technology. This is expected to address educational disparities and provide inclusive education for all Filipinos. The DepEd plans to work with local government units and relevant agencies to implement specific plans for funding, teacher training, and infrastructure development to achieve the law's objectives.
