Logs, debris clog waterways in flood-hit Bataan village
In Dinalupihan, Bataan, recent floodwaters have choked the Pita River and its tributaries with logs and debris, raising concerns among residents. The debris is suspected to have originated from neighboring Zambales.
DINALUPIHAN, Bataan — Logs, tree branches and firewood clogged waterways and the Pita River in Barangay Pita, an area severely affected by flooding in this landlocked town. The river overflowed and swept away at least nine houses near its banks on Sept. 2. The Dinalupihan Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, together with local police, conducted forced evacuations of residents in affected areas. Residents who posted their concerns on social media said the logs and other debris may have come from neighboring Zambales, noting that there had been no reported illegal logging activities in Dinalupihan. They said the floodwaters, carrying logs and firewood, may have contributed to the river’s overflow and the destruction of houses.
