Cambodia Unveils National Mine Action Strategy 2026-2035

The Cambodian government has officially approved and launched its National Mine Action Policy for the period 2026-2035. This policy clearly defines the goals and direction for resolving issues related to explosive remnants of war (ERW) that remain on Cambodian soil. Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice President of the Mine Action Authority, Ly Thuch, revealed this policy on September 1 during a meeting with Singapore's Ambassador to Cambodia, Steven Pang. The Deputy Prime Minister stated that mine action is not merely humanitarian aid but an important component of national development, closely linked to food security, rural development, poverty reduction, infrastructure development, and improving the quality of life for citizens. Furthermore, the Deputy Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the Singaporean government for its support of Cambodia's initiative to establish the "ASEAN Regional Center for Mine Action," and requested continued support for the center's activities and missions. In response, Ambassador Steven Pang affirmed Singapore's commitment to maintaining good relations with Cambodia and further strengthening the long-standing friendship and close ties between the two countries. He specifically pledged cooperation with the Cambodian government on its clear policy to resolve the issues of landmines and ERW. Despite decades having passed since the end of the civil war, the landmine problem in Cambodia continues to affect vast areas of the country, hindering agricultural land use and infrastructure development, and claiming many lives. The announcement of this national policy signifies the government's strong determination to address this urgent issue. The mention of the ASEAN Regional Center initiative also suggests Cambodia's diplomatic stance aimed at contributing to regional problem-solving.
