Vietnam Focuses on Market Discipline Amid E-commerce Expansion

The rapid development of e-commerce and social media platforms in Vietnam is injecting new momentum into goods circulation, boosting consumption, and expanding business opportunities. However, this growth also highlights challenges such as cross-border smuggling, trade fraud, and the circulation of counterfeit goods. In response, the Vietnamese government is strengthening its focus on maintaining market discipline and protecting consumers. Vĩnh Long province, in particular, is taking decisive action to prevent smuggling, trade fraud, and counterfeit products. Customs authorities have seized goods worth over VND 2.6 trillion (approximately USD 100 million) through post-clearance inspections, indicating the scale of illicit trade. In An Giang province, proactive prevention and effective combat against various types of crime are being promoted. The government has established six key task forces to combat smuggling, trade fraud, and counterfeit goods, intensifying crackdowns. Customs is enhancing control over smuggling, counterfeit items, and narcotics on critical routes, aiming to tighten market discipline and protect a healthy market environment. Under Vietnam's one-party system, maintaining social stability and order alongside economic growth is a crucial task. While the expansion of e-commerce can offer new sales channels for small and medium-sized enterprises and potentially revitalize local economies, it also carries risks of consumer harm and unfair competition if regulations lag behind. In relation to China, geographical proximity constantly poses risks of cross-border crime and the influx of counterfeit goods. The government needs to simultaneously advance legal reforms and strengthen enforcement to ensure market transparency and fairness, thereby ensuring that the benefits of economic development reach all citizens.
