Cambodia Enhances Waterway Safety Following Ferry and Sand Barge Collision

A collision occurred between a passenger ferry and a sand barge in Kandal Province, Cambodia. Following this incident, Kandal Provincial Governor Kouch Chamroeun, along with various authorities and technical officials, immediately visited the site. Borey Vongsanith, Director of the Kandal Provincial Department of Public Works and Transport, and Ariyaksar City Governor Chan Dara met with the management of the cargo company at the pier, which was the scene of the accident. During the meeting, all ferry captains were instructed to prioritize passenger safety and operate with the utmost caution at all times. Furthermore, the installation of surveillance cameras on all ferries was proposed to facilitate prompt monitoring and inspection in the event of any accidental incidents. The authorities also urged strict adherence to waterway safety regulations and regular technical inspections. This accident has served as a catalyst for reviewing Cambodia's water transportation safety management system. As the use of water transport increases with economic development, ensuring passenger safety has become a pressing issue. The authorities intend to further strengthen measures to prevent the recurrence of similar accidents in the future.
