Battambang Train Derailment Causes Oil Spill; Ministry of Environment Responds

A train derailment in Cambodia's western Battambang province has resulted in a significant oil spill. Following the incident, the Cambodian Ministry of Environment announced on September 20, 2026, that its expert teams are working around the clock in collaboration with local authorities and relevant agencies to manage the emergency response. The accident occurred on September 19 near the railway tracks in Ochar village, Battambang city. Five freight cars derailed, with three carrying diesel and two carrying gasoline. An estimated 90,000 to 100,000 liters of diesel are believed to have spilled from the three affected diesel cars, spreading into surrounding canals and soil. Specialized teams from the Ministry of Environment, along with provincial environmental officials, are leading the environmental management and response efforts at the site. Residents have been instructed to wear masks and avoid approaching the spilled oil to prevent fire hazards and direct contact with chemical substances. Emergency vehicles, including fire trucks, are on standby at the scene. The Ministry is working closely with the railway operator, Royal Railway Cambodia, to restore the affected area. To contain the spread of the spilled oil, three wooden barriers have been erected in the canals. The spilled oil is being pumped and safely stored. Oil-absorbing materials have also been deployed in nearby canals to capture any remaining oil. This incident highlights the potential for severe environmental and public health impacts if not managed promptly and effectively.
