Justice For Myanmar demands dismantling of military junta network to combat cyber scams

The Justice For Myanmar group has stated that to genuinely combat the expanding cyber scam operations (online scams) within Myanmar, the network of the military junta and its subordinate armed groups, which are the root cause of these operations, must be dismantled. A statement released by Justice For Myanmar today (August 6) indicates that the Myanmar military junta is the primary root cause of the growth of cyber scam operations that harm citizens in Myanmar, Thailand, and around the world. The group has accused the military junta of being at the center of criminal networks and profiting from cyber scam operations in connection with its subordinate people's militia groups, including the Karen Border Guard Force (BGF). It also stated that these profits have become a financial source that continues to support the military junta's military operations and international crimes. Justice For Myanmar has also pointed to the involvement of foreign companies profiting from the electricity and fuel sectors, as well as some corrupt officials, in the further expansion of cyber scam operations in the Myawaddy region after the 2021 military coup. Furthermore, it urged the Thai government to take action against those involved in cross-border crimes, rather than granting political legitimacy by engaging with the military junta leader Min Aung Hlaing. Justice For Myanmar has demanded that Thai authorities investigate and take action against those involved in human trafficking and cross-border crimes, particularly those connected to the Karen Border Guard Force, including Saw Chit Thu, Tin Win, and Mot Hsun. Regarding Min Aung Hlaing's visit to Thailand, the group stated that it is necessary to cut off the financial, arms, and fuel sources of the military junta, rather than granting it political legitimacy. Online scam operations within Myanmar are increasingly drawing international attention as a cross-border crime linked to ethnic armed organizations in border areas and human trafficking networks.
