Cambodia Seeks Diversification Beyond China Dependence with New Economic Strategy

Cambodia has announced a new economic strategy aimed at reducing its reliance on China and placing the economy on a sustainable growth trajectory. The strategy centers on diversifying export markets, attracting foreign direct investment (FDI), and enhancing the competitiveness of domestic industries. For many years, Cambodia's economy has heavily depended on investment and trade from China. Chinese investment, particularly in infrastructure development and real estate, has been significant, driving economic growth but also creating a structure vulnerable to fluctuations in the Chinese economy. The new strategy emphasizes strengthening integration within the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) to expand intra-regional trade. Furthermore, it aims to boost exports to new markets, including Japan, South Korea, and Western countries, by supporting product quality improvement and adherence to international standards. Efforts will also focus on improving the investment climate. By enhancing legal transparency, simplifying bureaucratic procedures, and investing in human capital development, the government intends to attract investment from a wider range of countries.
