Efforts underway to block the breach in the Ngwan embankment

It has been learned from the Ayeyarwady Region Government that efforts are underway to block the areas where the Ngwan embankment has breached and river water is flowing in in the Let'marrnar Township, Ayeyarwady Region. Region Chief Minister U Aye Kyaw and regional government officials inspected the site where such work is being carried out on the afternoon of August 1st. Currently, at the 25/3 mile point of the Ngwan embankment in Htan Gone village, Thakhut Chaung village group, Let'marrnar Township, the 30-foot-wide water inlet of the embankment (old embankment) has been blocked, and work is underway to drive floating logs into the 120-foot-wide water inlet, it is learned. The Directorate of Irrigation and Water Utilization Management stated that three old motorboats, each 55 feet long, will be filled with sand and sunk to block the water flow in the central water channel, which is 20 feet deep. It is also learned that once the water flow is reduced and the embankment is closed, work will be carried out to block the water with Geo Bags. Region Chief Minister U Aye Kyaw instructed that human and mechanical resources be mobilized to work diligently to complete the work of reducing the water flow and closing the embankment as quickly as possible. According to statistics received as of August 1st, due to the embankment breach, 1734 houses in 5 wards and 5 village groups in Let'marrnar Township have been evacuated to higher ground, with 1764 households comprising 8382 people. Rescue operations are being accelerated, and government departments, social welfare organizations, and generous donors are donating and distributing drinking water, rice, food supplies, and relief items to the flood-affected people, according to the Ayeyarwady Region Government.
