Thailand Accelerates PPP Solutions at Lat Krabang ICD to Ease Traffic Congestion

Thai Minister of Transport, Pipat, inspected the Lat Krabang Inland Container Depot (ICD) near Bangkok, instructing that solutions for delays and issues within Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects be prioritized. This inspection aims to alleviate traffic congestion, which is a bottleneck in Thailand's domestic logistics, and to increase the utilization rate of rail transport for cargo heading to Laem Chabang Port, a major port. The Lat Krabang ICD plays a crucial role as a logistics hub for the Bangkok metropolitan area. However, chronic traffic congestion on surrounding roads hinders the swift import and export of goods, leading to increased logistics costs and delayed lead times. The impact of congestion is unavoidable, especially with the current high dependence on truck transport. It has been pointed out that delays in permits, contractual issues, and insufficient coordination among related agencies in infrastructure development and service improvement projects undertaken through PPP methods are hindering project progress and the realization of expected benefits. Minister Pipat urged relevant departments to engage in more proactive and effective collaboration to resolve these issues quickly. Rail freight transport is an effective means for both alleviating congestion and improving logistics efficiency, as it allows for the simultaneous transport of large volumes of cargo with reduced environmental impact. Increasing the proportion of rail transport from Lat Krabang ICD to Laem Chabang Port is considered to contribute to strengthening Thailand's international competitiveness. This on-site inspection by the minister and his strong intention to resolve issues are seen as concrete steps towards improving Thailand's logistics infrastructure.
