Cambodia and Myanmar Ink Four MoUs to Bolster Government, Parliamentary, and Trade Ties

PHNOM PENH, Sept 11, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia and Myanmar signed four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) Friday aimed at strengthening government‑to‑government and parliamentary cooperation, as well as trade and wider economic ties, during Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing’s state visit to Phnom Penh. Cambodian Senate spokesman Chea Thyrith said the agreements were discussed during a meeting between Acting Head of State Samdech Techo Hun Sen and President U Min Aung Hlaing at the Solidarity Palace. According to Thyrith, the MoUs cover political cooperation, government‑to‑government relations, parliamentary exchanges, education, trade, culture and people‑to‑people links. He described the signing as an important milestone in bilateral relations, noting that Cambodia and Myanmar have maintained stable and resilient ties over the past seven decades. Thyrith said President Min Aung Hlaing told Hun Sen he wanted to see greater economic resilience between the two countries, including increased investment in Myanmar. He encouraged Cambodian businesses to expand operations there, stressing the importance of deepening economic engagement alongside political and cultural cooperation. Hun Sen also described the visit as a milestone in relations between Phnom Penh and Naypyidaw. Min Aung Hlaing praised Cambodia’s development progress and expressed a commitment to broadening cooperation in multiple sectors. The Myanmar president is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Hun Manet and other senior leaders during his two‑day state visit. His programme includes wreath‑laying ceremonies at Cambodia’s Independence Monument and at the Royal Statue of the late King Norodom Sihanouk. The visit reflects both countries’ commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across economic, political, cultural and other areas of mutual interest, while reinforcing their shared interest in regional dialogue and stability.
