Nearly 1,400 Martyrs' Remains Recovered Under '500-Day Campaign'

Within four months of launching Vietnam's '500-Day Campaign,' authorities have recovered 1,384 sets of martyrs' remains, according to the National Steering Committee for the Search, Recovery and Identification of Martyrs' Remains. The campaign aims to collect and identify the remains of soldiers who sacrificed for the nation, particularly those from past conflicts like the Vietnam War. National leaders have repeatedly emphasized the significance of this initiative. A top leader stated that identifying the remains of fallen soldiers is a "sacred responsibility towards the Fatherland" and urged citizens to support the campaign. The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha has also called on its affiliates to assist in the identification process, indicating a societal push to back this endeavor. DNA sample collection for identification is underway for some recovered remains, notably in Tuyen Quang province, a crucial step to identify over 3,900 martyrs. Archived records are identified as the "golden key" to the campaign's success. Under Vietnam's one-party system, honoring national contributors and supporting their families are viewed as vital for national unity and fostering patriotism. As Vietnam continues its economic growth, addressing the legacy of past wars and preserving national memory remains an integral part of its identity formation.
