Davao Transport Modernization Project on Track for 2028 Partial Operations

The Department of Transportation (DoTr) announced that the Davao Public Transport Modernization Project is on track and is expected to begin partial operations by the first quarter of 2028. Transportation Acting Secretary Giovanni Z. Lopez stated, “This project will bring real, lasting benefits to Dabawenyos — safer rides, shorter travel times, and a public transport system they can count on every day. This is why we continue to work hand in hand with our partners to keep moving forward and ensure that the project is completed on time.” The DoTr is collaborating with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to assess the project’s progress and enhance coordination among partners. The modernized bus system is slated for partial operations by the first quarter of 2028. The project is part of the DoTr’s commitment to advancing the shift to electric public transport, with electric buses expected to constitute nearly 40% of the modernized bus fleet. It will feature dedicated bus stops and lanes on selected roads. The three components of the project include a high-priority bus system, strengthening institutional capacity for project execution, and the delivery of social development programs. The Davao Public Transport Modernization Project covers a 672-kilometer road network with 29 routes, and will deploy approximately 1,000 buses, of which 386 will be electric.
