UNESCO Ready to Collaborate with Vietnam on International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development

Jonathan Wallace Baker, UNESCO Representative to Vietnam, noted that the official proclamation of the 2027–2036 period as the "International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development" comes at a particularly important moment. As the international community works to accelerate progress towards the 2030 Agenda while beginning to consider what comes after 2030, the Decade provides a ten-year framework to strengthen the place of culture in development. The UN's adoption of the Vietnam-proposed International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development initiative highlights the nation's commitment to integrating culture into its development agenda. This aligns with Vietnam's broader efforts to leverage its rich cultural heritage for national development and international engagement. Vietnam has been increasingly emphasizing the role of culture in its national development strategies, recognizing its importance beyond economic growth. The government aims to preserve and promote its cultural values while fostering creativity and innovation. This focus on culture is also seen as a way to enhance Vietnam's soft power and its standing on the global stage. In the context of its foreign relations, particularly with neighboring countries like China, culture can serve as a bridge for dialogue and mutual understanding, complementing diplomatic efforts. Domestically, the initiative is expected to spur greater public participation in cultural activities and support for artists and cultural practitioners, contributing to a more vibrant and cohesive society. The International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development offers Vietnam a significant platform to showcase its cultural achievements and collaborate with global partners to achieve sustainable development goals through the power of culture.
