DENR Cites Public Role After Cotabato Wildlife Turnover

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has highlighted the public's role in wildlife conservation after two Cotabato residents voluntarily turned over 12 rescued wildlife species to its provincial office on Sept. 10. “The recovery highlights growing community initiative and adherence to Republic Act (RA) No. 9147, also known as the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act,” the DENR said in a statement. The recovered wildlife included Philippine flying foxes, Philippine crocodiles, Philippine green pigeons, turtles, and snakes. Under RA 9147, it is illegal to hunt, possess, or trade protected wildlife species without proper permits. The DENR lauded the residents for their initiative, emphasizing that their actions demonstrate a growing community awareness and adherence to wildlife protection laws. The agency stressed the importance of wildlife conservation for maintaining ecological balance and preserving biodiversity. Furthermore, the DENR plans to strengthen its information campaigns and collaboration with local communities to combat illegal wildlife poaching and trade. This incident is seen as a positive sign of increasing public awareness regarding wildlife conservation across the Philippines, a country known for its rich biodiversity but also facing threats from habitat destruction and illegal hunting.
