Min Aung Hlaing Visits Angkor Wat and Bayon Temple Before Concluding Cambodia Trip

On September 12, 2026, during his official visit to Cambodia, Chairman of the State Administration Council of Myanmar, Min Aung Hlaing, visited the magnificent ancient Khmer temples of Angkor Wat and Bayon, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. While touring the Angkorian lands, Chairman Min Aung Hlaing expressed great admiration for the ancient Khmer temples and gained a thorough understanding of Cambodia's history. Mr. Im Sokreth, an archaeologist from the Authority for the Protection and Management of Angkor and the Greater Siem Reap Region (APSARA Authority), stated that Cambodia and Myanmar (Burma) have had relations since ancient times. Based on past research, the APSARA Authority has discovered 13 inscriptions in the Burmese language in the Angkor region, with 10 located at Angkor Wat and three others in Angkor Thom, near Bayon Temple. Studies show that the oldest Burmese inscriptions in the Angkor area date back to the early 19th century. Some of those who inscribed them traveled as families, while others came alone. The content generally confirms the names of the writers, the dates, and the regions where they lived. In the case of Bayon Temple, research indicates that those who inscribed the texts were Burmese monks who came to pay homage to the Buddha statues within the temple, particularly the Kokak Buddha.
