Minors, 18-year-old arrested for online threats in South Cotabato

Three individuals, including two 16-year-olds and an 18-year-old, were apprehended in separate operations in South Cotabato province for allegedly posting online threats and content that frightened residents, particularly students and parents, Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo Jr. said Monday. In a post on his official social media page, Tamayo stated that the arrested individuals were involved in "online threats" and "inciting fear." These posts had reportedly caused concern among the local community, especially among the youth and their guardians. Governor Tamayo emphasized that social media posts carry responsibility, expressing concern over the significant impact, particularly when minors are involved. The arrests highlight the authorities' vigilance against the spread of inappropriate online content. In the Philippines, with the rise of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), young people domestically are increasingly exposed to various information via social media. However, online scams, cybercrimes, and threats like this incident continue to occur. The government is advocating for the importance of improving digital literacy and awareness campaigns on safe online information usage. Amidst the escalating South China Sea tensions, maintaining domestic security is also a pressing issue, and addressing acts that cause online disruption is considered conducive to overall societal stability.
