Leyte Geothermal Plant Set for P70-B Upgrade

The Energy Development Corp. (EDC) is studying a P70-billion redevelopment of its aging geothermal facilities in Leyte, a project that could add 200 to 400 megawatts (MW) of new generating capacity and extend the use of the province’s decades-old geothermal resources. Francis Giles Puno, EDC Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, stated that the upgrade aims to prolong the lifespan of the geothermal resources that have been utilized in the island for many years. Leyte is a key hub for geothermal power generation in the Philippines, and EDC has been instrumental in developing and operating this renewable energy source for a long time. This redevelopment is expected to contribute to stabilizing the Philippines' energy supply and support the nation's goals for transitioning to renewable energy.
