Asian Games Open Amidst Challenges in Japan

The 20th Asian Games (Asian Games) officially opened in Nagoya, Japan, on September 19, 2026, with a magnificent ceremony featuring vibrant dance performances and fireworks, despite facing numerous challenges during the preparation phase, according to Reuters. His Majesty Emperor Naruhito of Japan officially declared the event open after witnessing the parade of 45 participating countries and regions, alongside Kirsty Coventry, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The Emperor's presence was accompanied by stringent security measures, with 10,000 police officers deployed for the ceremony. The ceremonial torch was jointly lit by Shigenobu Murofushi and his son Koji Murofushi, both former Asian Games hammer throw champions. Organizers hope that the opening ceremony will help to overcome the turbulent preparation period, which was marred by criticism and complaints from athletes and officials regarding accommodation and transportation. As a cost-saving measure, instead of building a separate athletes' village, organizers housed athletes and officials in hotel rooms, temporary wooden containers, and a cruise ship. Delegations from many countries and regions, including host Japan, found the arrangements to be significantly below standard, complaining about confusion and double bookings, and overly cramped wooden container rooms. Some countries even made their own arrangements, organizing separate hotel accommodations for their athletes and officials due to a lack of beds. Many delegations also grumbled about long waits for athletes during check-in, as well as late bus arrivals or buses taking athletes to the wrong competition venues. Regarding these issues, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), which oversees the quadrennial event, acknowledged these problems on September 19 but deemed them as merely initial challenges. The 20th Asian Games, which opened on September 19 and are scheduled to close on October 4, 2026, welcome over 11,000 athletes competing for a total of 369 gold medals across 43 sports.
