Cambodia Braces for 40-70% Rainfall Probability Amidst Monsoon Influence

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology has announced that the probability of rainfall nationwide will reach 40% to 70% in the coming days. This is due to the pressure configuration in the Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, and the South China Sea influencing the southwest monsoon pattern, which affects the Mekong River basin, Cambodia's coast, and the Cambodian mainland. According to the ministry, from September 9th to 11th, there is a high probability of phenomena such as rainfall, gusty winds, and thunderstorms occurring in Cambodia. Specifically, the probability of rainfall is predicted to be 70% in the plateau regions, 60% in the central lowlands, and approximately 40% in coastal areas. Currently, Cambodia is under the influence of the El Niño phenomenon, raising concerns about high temperatures and insufficient rainfall. However, the ministry points out that while rainfall volume in the country is not extremely low at present, and rainfall occurs intermittently, its distribution is uneven, leading to floods in some areas and drought in others. This situation could impact Cambodia's agriculture and water resource management, necessitating preparedness for both the long-term drought risks posed by El Niño and the risks of temporary heavy rainfall from the monsoon.
