Digital Radicalism Threat Rises, Local Governments Urged to Be Frontline Defense

Indonesia is facing a growing threat from digital radicalism, prompting calls for local governments (Pemda) to take on the role of the "frontline" in addressing this issue. This demand stems from increasing concerns that extremist ideologies are rapidly spreading through the internet and social media, posing a risk to societal stability. It is noted that younger demographics and those with lower information literacy are particularly vulnerable to radical propaganda. Local governments are expected to implement awareness campaigns tailored to local conditions, establish systems for monitoring and reporting suspicious online content, and intervene early with individuals who may be susceptible to radical ideologies. Strengthening cooperation with the central government to enhance information sharing and develop effective countermeasures is also crucial. Addressing digital radicalism requires not only content removal but also an educational approach that tackles root causes and enhances citizens' critical thinking skills.
