Indonesia will issue two presidential regulations in 2026 covering AI ethics and a national AI roadmap, aiming to embed ethics, transparency and accountability within its AI development. Yet the regulations rely on existing laws which have been applied selectively and lack independent enforcement, offering little protection against state misuse. Without a strong and independent data protection agency that can challenge state or corporate misconduct, concerns arise over whether AI may become yet another tool for political repression.
