Cambodia Enhances Local Financial Transparency and Accountability

In Kandal Province, central Cambodia, efforts are being intensified to enhance accountability and transparency in local finance. Deputy Governor Praek Sarath has instructed commune/district authorities to further disseminate information to the public, deepening their understanding of social accountability. Deputy Governor Sarath made these remarks on August 4, 2026, while leading the "Provincial Social Accountability Work Review Meeting for the First Half of 2026." The meeting was attended by representatives from relevant ministries and departments, all 13 commune/district administrations within the province, and various development partner organizations. The meeting was highlighted as crucial for reviewing the progress of social accountability work during the first half of the year, as well as for sharing lessons learned, experiences, and best practices. Furthermore, challenges encountered were brought up for collective discussion, aiming to propose solutions for smoother implementation and greater success of social accountability work within Kandal Province. The vision of social accountability work is to strengthen the partnership between sub-national administrations and citizens, thereby empowering citizens to participate in the management and use of budgets, and in the provision of public services at the local level. Deputy Governor Praek Sarath further added that this work is carried out by promoting access to information and enabling citizens to monitor and oversee the financial affairs and work performance of sub-national administrations. The ultimate goal is to drive the sub-national democratic development reform process more effectively. This initiative is part of Cambodia's governance reform agenda, expected to contribute to improving the quality of local administration and public services for its citizens.
