Laos Seeks Regional Cooperation and Economic Development at ASEAN Economic Ministers' Meeting

Laos is actively participating in the 58th ASEAN Economic Ministers' Meeting and Related Meetings, held in Metro Manila, the Philippines, contributing to discussions on strengthening regional economic cooperation and sustainable development. The meeting runs from September 21 to 24, serving as a crucial opportunity to deepen economic ties among ASEAN member states. Under its one-party system, Laos prioritizes economic development while maintaining close relations with Vietnam and China. The first-time co-hosting of the China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) by Timor-Leste signifies the expansion of the regional economic sphere and the creation of new market opportunities, from which Laos is likely seeking avenues for economic growth. Furthermore, at the OANA (Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies) 65th Anniversary Forum in Moscow, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the OANA President and the President of the Global Fact-Checking Network to enhance media reliability and professional standards. OANA, of which Laos News Agency (KPL) is a member, promotes information exchange and capacity building among media in the Asia-Pacific region, potentially aiding Laos in strengthening its international information dissemination and improving domestic media ethics and professionalism. Laos's economy is heavily reliant on hydropower and mineral resources. While infrastructure development, driven by increased Chinese investment, has been progressing, concerns regarding debt issues and inflation have also been raised. In this context, strengthening cooperation with ASEAN nations and participating in international media cooperation frameworks can be seen as strategic moves for Laos to overcome its economic challenges and achieve a more stable growth trajectory.
