The initial batch of propagules is earmarked for production areas in Zamboanga, Palawan, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). Future shipments are planned for Cebu, Iloilo, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, and Masbate. Ida T. Capacio, chief aquaculturist at BFAR, stated that the seaweed bioreactor is a long-awaited investment for an industry where the Philippines ranks as the fourth-leading global producer. "We used to rely on improvised systems, but now we can produce quality propagules much faster," Capacio said in a statement. Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel, Jr. expressed optimism that the facility will help solidify the Philippines' position as a leading global producer of Kappaphycus seaweed. Kappaphycus is a type of red algae used in the production of carrageenan, an extract with applications in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. The DA is also exploring additional sites for bioreactor installations in Palawan and Mindanao.
