Lawmaker Hopes Textbook Shortage Plan Gets Spotlight

Parañaque Rep. Brian Raymund Yamsuan has expressed hope that his proposal for a long-term plan to address the textbook shortage will also gain attention from the House of Representatives. He noted that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. also emphasized the importance of education in his recent State of the Nation Address (SONA). Yamsuan stated that the perennial issue of textbook scarcity directly impacts the quality of education and requires sustainable solutions rather than just short-term fixes. The textbook shortage has been a persistent challenge in the Philippine education system for years, attributed to factors such as delays in printing and distribution, budget constraints, and a growing student population. Children in rural areas and from low-income families often face difficulties accessing adequate and up-to-date learning materials. Yamsuan's proposal aims to review and streamline the entire supply chain of educational materials, from planning and development to manufacturing, distribution, and delivery to schools. This could potentially include the integration of digital learning resources and community-based material development. While the Department of Education has undertaken efforts to alleviate the shortage, challenges remain. The congressman's advocacy is seen as a push to elevate the issue in the government's educational policy priorities and translate it into concrete actions.
