Cambodia and Japan Affirm Enhanced Cooperation in Education and Sports

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, met with Governor Hideaki Ohmura of Aichi Prefecture, Japan, during his visit to Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, to participate in the 20th Asian Games in 2026. The meeting affirmed the continuation of cooperation between the two countries in the fields of education, youth, and sports. During the meeting, Dr. Naron expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome and excellent arrangements provided by Japan as the host country for the Asian Games. He highlighted the efforts of Nagoya City and Aichi Prefecture in organizing this significant sporting event, emphasizing its role as a platform to strengthen friendship, cooperation, peace, and mutual understanding among the people and countries of the region under the vision of "Imagine One Asia," which carries a message of solidarity to the Asian continent. Furthermore, the Deputy Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for the good relations between Cambodia and Japan, as well as Japan's support for Cambodia's development and peacebuilding efforts. He underscored the importance of Japanese investment and the contribution of Japanese companies in creating jobs and developing human resources in Cambodia. He noted that Japanese companies, including Toyota and those in the electronics and electronic components sector, have established operations in Cambodia, creating employment opportunities, and that Japanese investment has significantly contributed to the development of local human resource capacity. In response, the Japanese side affirmed their continued support for Cambodia in education, youth, and sports, particularly by expanding scholarship programs and learning opportunities for Cambodian students to gain experience from Japan's education and training systems. The Governor mentioned the long-standing good relations and friendship between Japan and Cambodia, and the commitment to further enhance existing cooperation in education. He noted that Aichi Prefecture has welcomed many Cambodian workers and trainees who have gained valuable experience and returned to Cambodia to contribute to national development. He also pointed out the establishment of a doctoral program by Nagoya University in Phnom Penh through the Japanese Law Study and Research Center at the Royal University of Law and Economics (RULE) since 2008. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to continue strengthening and expanding cooperation between Cambodia and Japan through sports, education, human resource development, investment, and economic development.
