Cambodia Emphasizes Literacy as Foundation for Quality Education and Inclusive Society

Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia – On September 6, a ceremony was held at N.Rorn Rith-Kun Bopha High School in Prey Chor District, Kampong Cham Province, to commemorate International Literacy Day, observed annually on September 8. During the event, Mr. Khon Pros, Deputy Governor of Kampong Cham Province, emphasized that literacy serves as the fundamental basis for developing basic knowledge, professional skills, and enhancing the quality of inclusive education. Mr. Pros stated that literacy extends beyond the mere ability to read, write, and perform arithmetic. It also enhances the capacity to utilize information, think analytically, solve problems, and develop digital literacy, which is essential for global citizens in today's technologically advanced and scientifically progressive world. The Deputy Governor further affirmed that the Royal Government of Cambodia considers the promotion of literacy as the "most valuable investment in human capital." He explained that equipping citizens with knowledge and skills creates driving forces for participation in social, economic, and cultural activities, fostering lifelong learning opportunities. This, in turn, contributes to poverty reduction, improved work productivity, strengthened family well-being, and the construction of an equitable, resilient, innovative, inclusive, and sustainable knowledge-based society. Mr. Khon Pros concluded by appealing to relevant ministries, national and international organizations, development partners, communities, and all citizens to continue paying close attention to literacy work.
