Suntory PepsiCo Opens Asia's Largest Smart Factory in Vietnam, Pursuing Sustainability

Suntory PepsiCo has inaugurated its state-of-the-art factory in Tay Ninh, Vietnam, which stands as one of the largest in the Asia-Pacific region with a total investment of $300 million. This facility signifies not just an expansion of production capacity but also a long-term commitment to Vietnam's sustainable development. The factory, spread across a vast area, operates with a high degree of automation, blurring the lines between human operation and technology. Within its smart warehouse system, automated robots efficiently move pallets, while production lines process thousands of beverage cans per minute. Every step, from raw material intake to packaging, warehousing, and logistics, is interconnected through real-time data, ensuring highly precise and efficient operations. This facility is not only the largest for Suntory PepsiCo Vietnam but also the biggest production base for both Suntory and PepsiCo in the Asia-Pacific region. Local government officials in Tay Ninh Province have lauded the project as a model for applying advanced technology and sustainable development, anticipating its contribution to technology transfer, the formation of modern industrial ecosystems, digital transformation, and the improvement of local livelihoods. A significant achievement is the dramatic improvement in resource consumption efficiency. The latest production lines operate at nearly four times the speed of previous generations, yet require a substantially reduced workforce. Production output that previously needed 400-500 workers is now achieved by approximately 300 highly skilled technicians, indicating a shift from labor quantity to quality. Commitment to sustainability is integrated from the factory's design phase. The LEED Gold-certified facility utilizes eco-friendly building materials and incorporates energy-saving technologies and renewable energy solutions. 100% of the steam required for production is generated from biomass energy, primarily using rice husks sourced locally. This approach not only reduces fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions but also promotes the utilization of agricultural by-products, adding value for rice farmers and establishing a green supply chain. Furthermore, the integration of solar power systems, a smart energy management platform, and a water recycling system optimizes resource utilization at each stage. Treated water is reused within the factory, and waste is sorted for recycling or co-processing. Over 20% of the factory's area is dedicated to green spaces and landscaping. Notably, the factory is equipped with the capacity to produce packaging using 100% recycled PET (rPET), contributing to the promotion of a circular economy. In the beverage industry, this solution not only reduces virgin plastic usage but also aims to cut emissions across the entire value chain, moving towards Net Zero goals. Through this advanced facility, Suntory PepsiCo demonstrates that growth and environmental protection can be achieved simultaneously, offering a response to the global challenge of climate change.
