Brahminy Kite Rescued in Tayabas City; Wildlife Protection Law Enforcement Emphasized

LUCENA CITY — A Brahminy kite (Haliastur indus), locally known as “lawin,” was found at a business establishment in Tayabas City, Quezon, on Monday (Sept. 7). The City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) said in a report that the medium-sized bird of prey was immediately turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for proper care and disposition. As both a predator and scavenger, it plays an important role in maintaining ecological balance by feeding on small animals and carrion, according to wildlife literature. CENRO reminded the public that hunting, collecting, or possessing wildlife is prohibited and punishable under Republic Act No. 9147, or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001. “Report any form of abuse or illegal activity that may harm our environment and natural resources,” the office said.
