Cambodia Railway CEO Eyes Regional Connectivity and Expanded Passenger/Freight Services

John Guiry, CEO of Royal Railway Group, expressed optimism about the significant growth potential of Cambodia's railway network over the next decade. He highlighted that Cambodia is one of the few places globally where railways are expanding, suggesting the current period marks just the beginning of what the network can achieve. Royal Cambodian Railways has already reported a 43 percent year-on-year revenue growth, supported by substantial private investment, including approximately $31 million from Royal Group chairman Kith Meng. Guiry acknowledged challenges such as skyrocketing fuel prices but noted that government regulation has been supportive. He stressed the importance of financially sustainable management that enables continuous self-investment, given the high operational costs of railways. While Cambodians were initially skeptical, Guiry believes this attitude has shifted as the achievements of Royal Cambodian Railways have become evident. He sees rail becoming integral to broader discussions on logistics, manufacturing, tourism, and regional connectivity, moving beyond its perception as mere infrastructure. On the passenger side, the company has invested around $1.8 million to enhance customer experience, aiming to make rail travel comfortable and secure. Guiry emphasized that trains sell an "experience, not just a journey," which holds significant potential for Cambodia's tourism sector. Future prospects include integration with the new Techo International Airport in Phnom Penh and potential extensions to tourist destinations like Siem Reap, Rattanakiri, and Mondulkiri. For freight, Royal Cambodian Railways is moving beyond the traditional model to integrate rail directly into corporate supply chains. Efforts are underway to develop logistics hubs and collaborate with major companies across industries such as rice, garments, and the transport of dangerous goods, positioning rail as a crucial part of Cambodia's industrial infrastructure. Regionally, the connection with Thailand is established, with a history of numerous cross-border commercial trains. Despite current complexities, Guiry is confident in the service's resumption.
