Mangyan group slams ‘fabricated cases’ in ancestral land dispute

CALAPAN CITY, Occidental Mindoro – The Mangyan-Iraya Repungpungan sa Malatabako, an indigenous group in Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro, has denounced what it calls “fabricated criminal charges” filed against its members by a real estate developer. They described the cases as retaliation for the legitimate defense of their ancestral domain. In a video statement, the group asserted that the legal actions are an attempt to obstruct their legitimate exercise of rights and to stifle their efforts in defending their land. This situation highlights a broader context in the Philippines where disputes over indigenous peoples' land rights often arise with development projects, leading to undue pressure on these communities.
