Ca Mau Airport to Resume Operations in November, Boosting Southern Vietnam's Economy

Ca Mau Airport, located at the southernmost tip of Vietnam, is slated to resume operations on November 1, 2024, following nearly a year of extensive upgrades and expansion. The airport had temporarily suspended flights in late October 2023 for the construction work. On July 31st, Mr. Pham Thanh Lam, Director of Ca Mau Airport, stated that the project is on schedule. In September, the unit will conduct flight calibration of equipment on the runway and taxiways before finalizing the last stages. Currently, Package 12, executed by Truong Son Construction Corporation, is focused on completing the surface structure of the runway, taxiways, and apron. Ancillary items such as drainage systems, fences, and patrol roads are being implemented concurrently. Meanwhile, the passenger terminal and other auxiliary constructions are seeing increased machinery and personnel, with a phased construction approach and overtime to expedite progress. Upon reopening, the Ca Mau - Ho Chi Minh City route will utilize Airbus A321 aircraft, a step up from the previous ATR72. The Ca Mau - Hanoi route is considered to have significant potential, though the aviation industry is still studying the most suitable plan. This route was previously launched in mid-2023 but was later suspended. Previously, during a working session on the plan to operationalize the airport post-completion, Mr. Lam Van Bi, Vice Chairman of the Ca Mau Provincial People's Committee, emphasized the substantial demand for passenger and cargo transport in the locality. The operation of larger aircraft connecting to Ho Chi Minh City, and subsequently expanding to Hanoi and other provinces, will enhance regional connectivity, attract investment, and drive socio-economic development. The Ca Mau Airport upgrade project has a total investment of approximately VND 2,400 billion (around $10 million USD) and commenced on August 19, 2025. It is a key project in the southernmost region of the country, contributing to socio-economic development, meeting national defense and security requirements, and strengthening connectivity with major economic centers nationwide. To facilitate construction, the airport had temporarily ceased operations from late October 2025. According to the master plan for the 2021-2030 period, Ca Mau Airport is projected to achieve 4C grade, with a capacity of one million passengers and 1,000 tons of cargo annually, qualifying it to receive Code C aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and A321 or equivalent. By 2050, the projected capacity is expected to rise to three million passengers and 3,000 tons of cargo per year.
