Driver sued for failing to report after hitting a person on the expressway

An express bus hit and killed a man passing through the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway, and the driver of the express bus, who failed to report the incident to the expressway police, has been sued, according to the Expressway Maintenance and Supervision Committee. The incident occurred early in the morning of September 15, near milepost 178 on the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway, on the Naypyidaw-Yangon bound lane. A man, approximately 45 years old, was hit by a car and found dead in the middle of the road. The car that hit him, however, drove away without reporting to the nearest expressway police station or outpost. An express bus that arrived at the Phyu Toe toll gate had its windshield and right headlight broken. Suspicious, relevant authorities inspected it and discovered it was the car that had hit and fled from the person, it was reported. Section 13 of the Expressway Law stipulates that "Notwithstanding anything contained in any existing law, if any motor vehicle, cart, or other vehicle not permitted to operate on the expressway is driven or parked, or if any person or animal causes damage or death to persons or property by passing through, the driver who drove in compliance with vehicle and road traffic regulations in accordance with the law shall not be held responsible." Despite this provision, in cases of collision with people, bicycles, tractors, carts, etc., on the expressway, the expressway police will investigate and confirm whether the victim violated the Expressway Law and whether the driver is a driver who operated in compliance with vehicle and road traffic regulations in accordance with the law. If the driver complied with the regulations, they will receive the protection of the Expressway Law, it is said. In this incident, the express bus driver, who failed to report to the expressway police and undergo investigation after hitting the person, has been sued under Section 304(a), it has been announced.
