Online Scam Crackdown in Poipet: 14 Thai Nationals Apprehended
A special operation targeting online scams in Poipet, Cambodia, has led to the apprehension of 14 Thai nationals. Seized items include numerous mobile phones and cash. This operation is part of the country's broader efforts to combat cybercrime.
Specialized forces from the Cambodian National Police, in collaboration with the Poipet City Administration and relevant forces, have continued to conduct administrative inspections under Sub-decree No. 03 at two locations in Poipet City, Banteay Meanchey Province, to prevent and suppress clandestine offenses such as technological fraud (Online Scam) and other criminal activities. This operation was carried out on July 10, 2026, under the direct order of His Excellency General Sar Thet, Commissioner General of the National Police. The operation was led by Lieutenant General E Sokhy, Lieutenant General Muong Sothea, and Lieutenant General Som Vannavireak, Deputy Commissioners General of the National Police, in cooperation with Mr. Kiat Hul, Governor of Poipet City, and with procedural facilitation from Mr. Muth Sambath, Deputy Prosecutor of the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Court. At the first location, a twin tower building with a height of 29 floors and 13 floors, located in Samaki Mean Chey Village, O'Chrov Sangkat, the working group inspected a total of 338 rooms and found 20 Indonesian nationals, including 4 women. No materials related to technological fraud offenses were found during the inspection. Immigration officials advised the representative of the building owner and permitted the foreign nationals to continue their stay without closing the location. Meanwhile, at the second location, a 12-story building with 132 rooms, located in the same village and sangkat, specialized forces found 14 Thai nationals, including one woman. They were taken for questioning and further proceedings at the command headquarters of the 911th Land Border Defense Infantry Battalion. During this operation, authorities seized one All-in-One computer, one laptop, three iPads, 123 mobile phones, 559,950 Thai Baht, and US$15,856. The personal belongings of the Thai nationals were not confiscated. Concurrently, the operation team decided to close four residential and office rooms. The seized evidence was handed over to His Excellency Lieutenant General Som Vannavireak, Deputy Commissioner General of the National Police, for safekeeping and further legal action.
