Bali Weekly: Gold Investment Scams, Foreigners in Prostitution, Land Seizures Dominate Headlines
Bali grapples with a surge in incidents including multi-billion rupiah gold investment scams, foreign nationals involved in prostitution, and the seizure of land valued over IDR 2 trillion, impacting residents and the island's image.
Several high-profile incidents have captured public attention in Bali over the past week, including a large-scale gold investment scam affecting local residents, arrests of foreign nationals for alleged prostitution, and the seizure of vast tracts of land valued in the trillions of rupiah. These events cast a shadow over daily life for many and potentially impact the island's famed image. In the gold investment scam, PT New Emas Now is accused of defrauding residents by promising high buyback prices for gold. One victim reported transactions totaling approximately IDR 676.7 million (197.250 grams) between December 2025 and June 2026, but has yet to receive payment. The company reportedly ceased operations and closed its office. A police report has been filed against three individuals, including the company's finance director, with the total number of alleged victims now at 22, and the total alleged loss reaching IDR 6.8 billion. Adding to concerns about foreign visitor conduct, a joint operation by the Bali Immigration Office and Bali Regional Police arrested 13 foreign nationals suspected of involvement in illegal prostitution. They were apprehended at three locations in Badung Regency, including Umalas and Seminyak, adding to a list of transgressions by tourists. Furthermore, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has seized 23 hectares of land in Ungasan, Badung Regency, near Melasti Beach. The land, reportedly controlled by PT Marga Srikaton Dwipratama (MSD) since 2014, is subject to a corruption investigation that allegedly caused state losses. The preliminary value of the land, according to the Indonesian Audit Board (BPK), is IDR 2.2 trillion, with an estimated current market value of up to IDR 4.8 trillion due to its prime tourist location. The seizure is linked to allegations that PT MSD failed to fulfill its obligation to build the Bali Regional Land Office (BPN) building as compensation for land acquisition. These incidents highlight Bali's complex challenges, including economic vulnerabilities, law enforcement issues, and land development disputes.
