Kampong Thom Authorities Intensify Crackdown on Illegal Fishing Gear

Kampong Thom provincial authorities are continuing their crackdown on the use of illegal fishing gear across the region. On the 15th, a large-scale operation was conducted in the village of Peam Bang, Stung district, with the cooperation of relevant authorities. This area also borders the Chikreng district of Siem Reap province. During the operation, a significant amount of illegal fishing gear was dismantled and destroyed on-site. This included 24 nets spanning over 1,200 meters, 34 net cages, three nets exceeding the regulated length of over 650 meters, six more net cages, and 980 wooden stakes. Additional illegal fishing gear was also confiscated. According to Mr. Som Son, Commander of the Kampong Thom Provincial Operations Zone and Permanent Vice-Chairman of the Committee for the Prevention, Control, and Suppression of Natural Resource Offenses, all captured fish were released back into the sea. Mr. Son urged the public to refrain from using fishing gear prohibited by law, emphasizing its importance for the recovery of fish stocks and the maintenance of abundant fisheries. He also expressed his determination to continue the crackdown on illegal fishing activities without leniency, ensuring the protection of national aquatic resources to meet the needs of the people nationwide and for future generations.
