Italian Tourists' Noise Incident Sparks Backlash on Italian Embassy's Facebook Page

A group of Italian youths allegedly caused a disturbance on the BTS Skytrain in Bangkok on July 24, reportedly resorting to insulting remarks and gestures towards a Thai woman who asked them to be quieter. The incident quickly went viral on Thai social media, leading to an influx of critical comments on the Italian Embassy's Facebook page by nightfall. The situation escalated after the Facebook page “Jae Moy v+” posted images and a caption detailing "Bad behavior by foreign tourists on the BTS," alleging that the youths made rude gestures, including pointing the middle finger, after being warned about their noise. A video clip shared by Manager online newspaper further illustrated the incident. Many comments expressed a strong sentiment, urging Italy to teach manners to its citizens. Remarks included "Italy should teach manners to their children" and "Money can't buy manners." Some comments also sarcastically questioned whether Italy possesses etiquette textbooks, contrasting it with Thailand's educational approach. Furthermore, some comments criticized the Italian Embassy's silence on the matter and even suggested potential protests. One comment stated, "If nothing happens and it remains silent like this, maybe we should all go and protest at the Italian embassies abroad, like in England, France, or Switzerland?" Currently, there has been no official statement from the Italian Embassy in Thailand regarding the incident, and comments have been restricted on some of its posts. Separately, another Facebook user, Prat Samsee, posted an open letter to Italian Ambassador Paolo Dionisi on his page. The letter detailed the incident and called for accountability and an apology from the involved parties. He emphasized the long-standing friendly relations between Thailand and Italy but stressed that the inappropriate behavior of a few individuals was unacceptable and had wounded the dignity of Thai people.
