Cambodia: Clever Robbers Apprehended by Vigilant Residents in Kampong Speu

In Kampong Speu, Cambodia, two robbers who used a clever ruse to attempt to steal a mobile phone from a shop were apprehended by vigilant residents. The incident occurred on the morning of September 20, 2026, at a convenience store in Svay Rumpear village, Baseth district, Kampong Speu province. The arrested individuals have been identified as Thon Thon, 23, and Nai Hing, 26, both residents of Baseth district, with unspecified occupations. They arrived on a black Honda 125cc motorcycle (license plate: Phnom Penh 1JQ-7609) and approached the shop owned by Phan Sophann, 46. The suspects pretended to stop for gasoline and to buy cigarettes. Seizing an opportunity, Thon Thon attempted to snatch an iPhone 11 (sky blue) placed near the counter by the shop owner. However, Sophann shouted "Thief!" alerting nearby residents who quickly converged on the scene. The residents swiftly surrounded the suspects, preventing their escape, and handed them over to the police. According to the police, the confiscated evidence includes the motorcycle used in the crime and the iPhone 11 that was targeted. The mobile phone has already been returned to the victim. The two suspects and the motorcycle are currently being processed by the specialized department of the Kampong Speu Provincial Police after being transferred from the Baseth District Police.
