P3.4-M Worth of Illegal Drugs Seized in Northern Luzon Drug Busts in One Week

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – The Ilocos Regional Police confiscated approximately P3.4 million worth of suspected shabu and marijuana plants during crime suppression operations conducted from September 1 to 7 in La Union. A police report indicated that 25 operations led to the arrest of 24 suspects in possession of 411.48 grams of suspected shabu, 2,740 fully grown marijuana plants, 1,400 marijuana seedlings, and 30 grams of dried marijuana leaves. The Ilocos Region comprises the provinces of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, and Pangasinan. This crackdown is part of the police's ongoing efforts to eradicate illegal drugs in the region. Brig. Gen. Crisaleo Tolentino, Ilocos police director, stated, “Our weekly accomplishments reflect the police’s commitment to responsive and effective law enforcement. We will remain relentless in our operations and steadfast in safeguarding the peace, safety, and security of communities across the Ilocos Region.” In addition to drug-related arrests, the police also apprehended 56 fugitives, including seven most wanted persons (MWPs) and 49 other wanted suspects. Furthermore, 20 operations against illegal gambling resulted in the arrest of 20 suspects and the confiscation of P33,457.00 in bet money. The drive against loose firearms accounted for nine weapons, with six surrendered and three deposited firearms. Illegal drug proliferation has been a long-standing societal issue in the Philippines, with the government continuing its war on drugs. Such seizures demonstrate the law enforcement's efforts in maintaining security, while also highlighting the persistent nature of the drug problem.
