Thailand to Launch Volunteer Military Service "Tahaan Arsa" Program to Boost National Defense and Youth Careers

The Thai government is set to fully implement the "Tahaan Arsa" (Volunteer Soldier) program in the 2027 fiscal year (October 2026 – September 2027), accelerating the transition from conscription to a volunteer system in national defense. This initiative is one of the pledges made by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul in parliament, aiming to simultaneously provide opportunities for young people to serve the nation and foster their personal development. According to the government spokesperson, the program will open its doors not only to active military personnel but also to reservists and those who have previously served, encouraging voluntary military service. Participants will receive benefits including a monthly salary and allowances totaling 15,000 baht, along with healthcare, disaster relief funds, and life insurance. Furthermore, military training is expected to cultivate basic qualities such as discipline, physical fitness, and mental fortitude. Crucially, it will offer opportunities for acquiring specialized skills and vocational training beneficial for future employment. Special quotas and bonus points will be provided for entrance examinations to become officer cadets (Nai Sib) and army soldiers, opening pathways for military careers and subsequent opportunities in the private sector or self-employment. Applications will be accepted from September 10, 2026, to January 24, 2027. Applications can be submitted online via rcm.rta.mi.th or in person at military units nationwide, as well as at district and provincial military recruitment offices. Eligibility requires completion of military cadet training (3rd-5th year), discharged soldiers, or reservists. For officer positions, a bachelor's degree or higher and an age between 18-35 years are required. For non-commissioned officer positions, a high school diploma or vocational certificate (Pv.Ch.) and an age between 18-30 years are necessary. The contract duration is four years, with the possibility of one renewal, extending the service up to a maximum of eight years. This program is positioned as part of a broader effort to restructure the national security system into a more flexible and efficient one. The voluntary participation of motivated individuals is expected not only to enhance the military's operational capabilities but also to contribute to the efficient utilization of limited state budgets. It is also being watched as a response to socio-economic challenges facing Thailand, such as a declining birthrate and the need for more specialized human resource development.
