Philippines Approves Public Transport Fare Hike; Student, Senior Discounts Remain

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has approved the recommendation from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) for fare hikes on public utility vehicles (PUVs), which was initially approved in March. This approval covers jeepneys, UV Express, and taxi services. The new minimum fare for traditional jeepneys will be P14 for the first four kilometers, a one-peso increase from the previous P13. Additionally, the fare for every succeeding kilometer will rise from P1.80 to P2. For modern jeepneys, the minimum fare will be P17 for the first four kilometers, up from P15, with the fare for subsequent kilometers increasing from P2.20 to P2.40. Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez, in a memorandum dated September 25, responded to the LTFRB's petition. He stated, "Having considered the bases set out in your Memorandum, particularly the prevailing operating cost conditions in the public transport sector and the need to maintain the viability and adequacy of public transport services, the recommendation is hereby APPROVED." The fare adjustment comes as drivers and operators grapple with soaring fuel prices, exacerbated by the Middle East conflict. Several bus operators have warned of potential operational halts if prices are not raised. Jeepney operators have also reported that some drivers have ceased operations and returned to their home provinces due to declining earnings.
