AI Summary

Forte, which began operations in Cambodia's nascent financial services sector in 1999, has mirrored the country's insurance industry's significant development over 27 years. Insurance has become a crucial pillar of the financial system, growing alongside the economy.

When Forte entered Cambodia’s insurance market in 1999, the Kingdom’s financial services sector was still emerging. Banking activity was limited, private sector investment was only beginning to recover, and insurance remained largely unfamiliar to businesses and consumers. Nearly three decades later, insurance has become an increasingly important pillar of Cambodia’s financial system, supporting lending, infrastructure development, foreign investment, manufacturing, trade and household financial protection as the economy has expanded. As Forte marks its 27th anniversary, the company says its own growth reflects the broader evolution of Cambodia’s insurance industry—from a niche financial service into an essential component of the country’s economic development. An Industry That Grew Alongside the Economy Cambodia’s rapid economic growth over the past two decades has fundamentally changed the role of insurance. As the banking sector expanded, property development accelerated and businesses became more sophisticated, demand increased for products capable of protecting assets, managing commercial risk and supporting long-term investment. Today, insurance underpins a wide range of economic activity, providing the financial confidence required for lending, construction, manufacturing, logistics, healthcare and corporate investment. Founded in 1999, Forte has expanded alongside this transformation, growing from a general insurer into a regional insurance group operating general and life insurance businesses in Cambodia and general insurance operations in Laos. Building Market Capacity Beyond expanding its own business, Forte says one of the industry’s biggest challenges has been developing the technical expertise required to support a modern insurance market. Group CEO Youk Chamroeunrith said investing in Cambodian talent has been central to building long-term industry capacity. “Our 27-year journey is completely anchored in Cambodia’s progress. We realized early on that long-term financial security requires homegrown expertise.” He said initiatives such as Forte’s actuarial scholarship programme are helping develop the next generation of insurance professionals as the sector becomes increasingly sophisticated. Increasing Technical Sophistication As Cambodia’s economy has diversified, insurers have also expanded beyond traditional products to offer more specialised forms of protection supported by stronger underwriting standards, digital capabilities and advanced risk management. Group Chief Insurance Officer Sergei Korol said the industry has evolved significantly over the past three decades. “True financial resilience is built on the harmony of robust technical underwriting, rigorous risk management, and localized innovation.” He said Forte has continued investing in technical capability while adapting insurance solutions to meet the changing needs of Cambodia’s economy. Investing in Local Leadership The company also points to leadership development as another indicator of the industry’s maturity. Rather than relying primarily on expatriate executives, Forte has increasingly promoted Cambodian professionals into senior management positions. Among them is Suy Channtharong, who joined the company in an entry-level role before becoming Chief Executive Officer of Forte Insurance. “Our growth is never just about numbers; it is about the capacity of our people,” he said. Positioning for the Next Phase Forte broadened its operations with the launch of Forte Life Assurance in 2019, expanding into Cambodia’s life insurance market as demand grows for long-term savings, protection and wealth planning products. Chief Executive Officer Prou Sythan said the company remains focused on expanding customer access while strengthening financial resilience across Cambodia. Looking ahead, the company expects the next phase of industry growth to be driven by greater financial literacy, increased insurance penetration, stronger technical capability and continued economic development. For Cambodia’s insurance sector, the past 27 years represent more than the growth of individual companies. They reflect the emergence of an industry that has developed alongside the Kingdom’s broader financial system and is now playing an increasingly important role in supporting investment, business confidence and long-term economic resilience.
