Ho Chi Minh City Proposes Monthly Support for Doctors Rotating to Local Health Stations

Ho Chi Minh City has proposed a monthly financial support package ranging from VND 12 million to VND 20 million (approximately $490-$810) for doctors working at local health stations and public primary healthcare facilities. This initiative aims to encourage doctors to serve in rural medical areas and improve the quality of local healthcare, addressing physician shortages. Notably, for geographically isolated areas like Con Dao island, the support amount is expected to be up to 1.5 times the standard rate, further incentivizing doctors to take up positions there. This proposal is seen as a measure to rectify the disparity in medical resources across regions in Vietnam and strengthen the foundation of the universal healthcare system. The concentration of doctors in urban centers and the shortage of medical personnel in rural areas have been long-standing issues in Vietnam. The government has been exploring enhanced incentives for doctors to work in rural areas, and this proposal from Ho Chi Minh City is viewed as part of that effort.
