Cambodia Thanks Vietnam for Observer Role in Cambodia-Thailand Border Dispute
The Commander-in-Chief of the Cambodian Army presented certificates of appreciation to Vietnamese military officers who served as members of the ASEAN observer group in the Cambodia-Thailand border dispute. The Commander-in-Chief of the Cambodian Army, General Vong Pisen, presented certificates of appreciation to Vietnamese military officers who served as members of the ASEAN observer group in the Cambodia-Thailand border dispute. He thanked Vietnam for its contribution to maintaining peace in the region. The Vietnamese soldiers who received the certificates were Colonel Ngo Son Chuong and Reserve Colonel Biev Son Yeung, both of whom are completing their mission terms in Cambodia. Speaking at the award ceremony held on the afternoon of July 14, 2026, General Vong Pisen expressed his gratitude to the Party, State, and Army of Vietnam for supporting the implementation of the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand and for sending military officers to serve as members of the ASEAN observer group in Cambodia, in the spirit of solidarity and shared responsibility of the ASEAN family. The General highlighted the friendly relations between Cambodia and Vietnam, neighboring countries that have a history of mutual cooperation in both wartime and peacetime. In the context of Cambodia facing disputes with Thailand, he stated that Vietnam's participation as an ASEAN observer reflects a shared commitment to seeking peace, stability, and maintaining ASEAN centrality. The Commander-in-Chief also praised the dedication, responsibility, and professionalism of all ASEAN observer members who have been away from their families and homelands to contribute to rebuilding peace, stability, and normalcy along the Cambodia-Thailand border and in the ASEAN region. It is noteworthy that Cambodia has consistently provided support to the ASEAN observers (AOT) and emphasized the indispensable importance of strengthening the role and mandate of the AOT to verify and ensure that the ceasefire implementation, as well as other measures agreed upon between Cambodia and Thailand, are fully and effectively carried out. Following Malaysia, the Philippines, currently the rotating chair of ASEAN, is leading this ASEAN observer group in inspecting, verifying, and reporting on the situation in the border areas between Cambodia and Thailand after the ceasefire came into effect.
