National Economics University Receives Over 23,000 IELTS Applications

The National Economics University (NEU) in Vietnam has received over 23,000 IELTS certificates for its 2024 admissions cycle, a nearly 1,000 increase from the previous year. This marks the ninth consecutive year of growth in IELTS submissions since the university began accepting them in 2017, when it received only about 50 applications. Dr. Le Anh Duc, Head of the Training Management Department at NEU, noted that the number of applicants submitting IELTS scores is stabilizing. While the figure was around 11,000-12,000 annually from 2023-2024, it surged to 22,000 in 2025. Currently, 80-85% of admitted students have IELTS scores of 5.5 or higher, with 65% achieving 6.5 or above. In contrast, the number of applicants using SAT or ACT scores stood at 2,000, a decrease of about 1,000. Meanwhile, domestic competency and aptitude tests like HSA, V-ACT, and TSA saw a significant increase, with 18,000 submissions compared to 15,000 last year. Dr. Duc attributes this rise to the growing appeal of these tests and NEU's policy of encouraging combined admissions using domestic competency scores with IELTS. He also mentioned that an analysis of the academic performance of students admitted in 2025 shows that those admitted via HSA scores tend to outperform others in certain academic segments. NEU employs three admission methods: direct admission, using high school graduation exam scores, and a combined admission approach. The combined method is predominant, allowing applicants to use SAT scores (1200/1600 or higher), ACT scores (26/36 or higher), domestic competency test results combined with international language certificates, or language certificates combined with scores from two subjects in the high school graduation exam (including mandatory Math). This trend reflects a broader push in Vietnam, under its one-party system, to align higher education with international standards to enhance global competitiveness and foster a skilled workforce.
