Foreign Capital Eyes Deeper Foothold in Vietnam Through M&A
Foreign direct investment (FDI) in Vietnam shows a trend of increasing capital through mergers and acquisitions (M&A), with registered capital surging despite a modest rise in new projects. Investment is concentrating in manufacturing, logistics, and technology, driving industrial structural changes.
Notably, the number of new FDI projects rose only 9.4% while their registered capital surged 96.8%, indicating a significant increase in average project size and investors’ stronger commitment from the outset. According to Savills experts, FDI continues to flow into manufacturing, logistics, technology and digital infrastructure, changing property requirements for investors. While appreciating the progress, FDI firms said the next stage of reforms should go beyond putting procedures online. They want administrative processes to be simplified on digital platforms, data systems to be better connected, information to be provided only once and regulations to be applied consistently. According to the Vietnam Coffee Cocoa Association (Vicofa), Vietnam exported nearly 1.7 million tonnes of coffee in the first eight months, earning more than 6 billion USD. Export volume rose by over 10% year on year, while export value fell by 11.2% due to lower export prices. Vietnam’s Index of Industrial Production (IIP) rose 11.9% year-on-year in the first eight months of 2026, the highest growth rate for the period in many years. The Government has issued a decree detailing the Law on Commerce and the Law on Foreign Trade Management regarding goods trading and related activities by foreign investors and foreign-invested economic organisations in Vietnam. With the current trading band of +/- 5%, the ceiling rate applicable for commercial banks during the day is 26,892 VND/USD, and the floor rate 24,330 VND/USD.
